The Reverend
William Palin, Stifford's rector between 1834 and
1882, he was the first local historian to write
solely about the Thurrock area. He published two
volumes -"Stifford and its Neighbourhood"
in 1871 and "More about Stifford and its
Neighbourhood" in the following year.
Panorama 32 contains a brief biography. William Palin was born in Mortlake on 10th November 1803, the 7th son of Richard Palin of Mortlake, Surrey, gentleman. He went to school at Lewes, Sussex. He matriculated St. Alban Hall, Oxford and was admitted a grant aided student at Trinity College Cambridge where he got his B.A. in 1833 and his M.A. in 1839. He began his working life as a private tutor. He was made a deacon on 2nd June 1833 and ordained as a priest on 25th May 1834 by the Bishop of London. He was admitted to Oxford in 1851 where he got his M.A. He became curate of Stifford in in 1833 and then rector the following year until his death in 1882. His patron was Richard B. | He married
Emily Isabella Slaughter daughter of Stephen Long,
solicitor and they had three daughters and one
son: Emily Isabella Jane, Mary Eliza, William Long, Fanny Elizabeth. Like many Stifford rectors he was a magistrate and for a time chairman of the bench at Orsett petty sessions. The portraits on this page were drawn by William Palin's son, William Long Palin. |
