| Thurrock contains 17
traditional Church of England parishes (ie parishes that
were in existence before 1850) and straddles the boundary
between Chafford and Barstaple hundreds. Orsett and West Thurrock were within the
Commissary of Essex and Hertfordshire; all other Thurrock
parishes were within the Archdeaconry of Essex.
Until the middle of the 19th
century all Thurrock parishes were in the Diocese of
London.
All Thurrock parishes were in the
Orsett Poor Law Union which also contained the parish of
North Ockendon.
