The
history of Thurrock is rich and varied, and the following
pages show only a glimpse of some of the noteworthy
events, people and places that have influenced the
development of our area, events which have in some cases
been triggered by circumstances of national importance,
for example Queen Elizabeth I's famous speech, the
building of Tilbury & Coalhouse Forts and the
garrison at Purfleet. The commemorative
plaques scheme will mark
many famous people, organisations or events associated
with Thurrock. In addition to the people and places on
this page, many more are mentioned in the latest society
publication - Exploring Thurrock.
