A denehole in Hangman's Wood

Not ancient gold mines or even storage pits, the deneholes in Hangman's Wood were excavations for chalk. See "Boldly From the Marshes" by Tony Benton. They date from the medieval period and provided the chalk that the local heavy clay soils needed.
