Ellen Austin was a
founder member of Thurrock Ladies Bowls Club in
1949 and became its Secretary in 1950. After gaining a
County badge in 1954, she played for the County many
times. She was winner of the Essex County Womens
Bowling Association Secretary -Treasurer Cup in 1961 and
runner-up in 1962. At the time of winning the Essex
County Singles Bowls Championship she had already won her
Clubs singles title six times and the mixed pairs
title on two occasions. Following her success as County
Champion, Ellen Austin reached the fourth round of the
National Singles Championship at Wimbledon, losing by one
shot. 
She continued to win many local
competitions and in 1968, at the age of 69, Ellen Austin
was nominated for Thurrock Sports Councils Sports
Personality of the Year Award, which she won. She is seen
